A Geiger counter is a device used for the detection and measurement of ionizing radiation. It is named after the German physicist Hans Geiger, who invented it in 1908. A Geiger counter consists of a gas-filled tube that ionizes when exposed to radiation, and an electric pulse that is measured and displayed on a screen.
